Hamburger Heaven (waiting for god(ot)). 2021

Wassaic Project.

In this piece, participants climbed to the 10th floor of an old mill, were asked to take a number in order to enter a cheese burger themed diner where they were met by the burger chef. They were then able to ask one question to a disco-ball ear while waiting for their burger order to be prepared; then the lights flipped off, and “cheeseburger in paradise” played through a disco infused light show. The answer to their question was then printed on their hamburger wrapper that they would then take “to-go”.

This work explored the post mid-COVID, Trump presidency futility, where questions were often unanswered, and a general sense of confusion and futility abounded. Referencing the “waiting” from Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, the participants, while fully engaged in a hyped-up, exciting performance, were left with unanswered/unsatisfied questions while perhaps(?) satisfied with their McDonald’s cheeseburger.
